Commentaries “Meine fremde Freundin”

‘The film’s writers explore power and powerlessness, scrutinize prejudice and the justice system, and question male and female behavior. In the meantime, the fantastic Ursula Strauss simply takes care of everything.’
Chip, Germany
‘Ursula Strauss plays this woman with a limited sense of empathy and enormous egocentricity sometimes loudly, sometimes softly, but always with fury and intensity.’
Donaukurier, Germany
‘My Strange Girlfriend is a courageous film that will certainly invite controversy. The most difficult role of the trio, however, belongs to Ursula Strauss. While Jaenicke thoroughly stifles any traces of empathy for Lehmann, Judith is a nuanced character.’
Frankfurter Rundschau, Germany
‘Brilliantly cast with Ursula Strauss, an intensive character study of human misconduct in an everyday milieu.’
Hoerzu, Germany
‘With the acerbic Jaenicke, the eternally pleasant Valerie Niehaus, and the Austrian star actress Ursula Strauss, who, here again, gives a very nuanced performance, all roles are perfectly cast, and that is the reason this drama about lies and truth remains enthralling over 90 minutes.’
Prisma, Germany
‘The new person in the office, played sensationally cool and calm by Ursula Strauss, leaves a lot up in the air for quite a while, and that is a special quality. Krohmer focuses on subtle situations and characters, engages in an in-depth game with stereotypes and apparent certainties, and also describes a pathology.’
Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany
‘An even greater performance was required of Ursula Strauss. Her Judith Lorenz is a compulsive liar. In people with her clinical profile, at some point, the stories take on a life of their own so strongly, that they themselves are convinced they are telling the truth. Ursula Strauss succeeds in poignantly portraying this personality disorder without calling into question the explosive nature of sexism and sexual assault.’
Tagesspiegel, Germany
‘On the cinematic level, the narrative of the perpetrator-victim-reversal functions well. It toys with the expectations of the audience, the film is convincing in surprising moments, and not least because of Ursula Strauss’ superb acting.’
TAZ, Germany
‘What has been created is a drama of transgressions and unimagined abysses, a film about female friendship and the power of prejudice. The discourse advanced by the film should not, however, lead criticism to deny the audience a free, unbiased viewing experience. For this outstanding film is about perspective – that of the characters, but also of the audience. There is great enjoyment afforded by the occasionally ambiguous performances of the wonderful actors, who are not only ideally cast, but also perfectly delineate their relationships in the triangle. Ursula Strauss can bring her entire range into play in this film. Her Judith is a person who has many sides, dark ones too: she can be charming, funny, and quick-witted; she stands up to the pushy macho at first, then breaks down, devastated, before she can clearly enjoy life again. This woman is mysterious. Strauss plays her with great fury and a lot of tears, vulnerable, pitiable, but also rough.’
Tittelbach, Germany
‘Gripping – with a top performance by Ursula Strauss.’
TV Media, Austria
‘The fantastic Ursula Strauss simply takes care of everything.’
TV Spielfilm, Germany
‘But the undisputed focal point is Ursula Strauss. Watching the Austrian actress during this exciting roller coaster ride is simply amazing.’
Welt, Germany
‘Completely unpretentiously, Krohmer reveals the ambivalence of human characters. Ursula Strauss is perfectly cast, and the fact that the film sets its story in an extremely ordered environment, reinforces the manner of storytelling even more.’
Zeit, Germany
